Box Office: "The Dark Knight Rises" Crushes the Competition

The excitement over its much-awaited theatrical debut quickly turned to sadness after a tragic shooting rampage claimed numerous lives in Aurora, Colorado, but "The Dark Knight Rises" still managed to deliver a dominant box office topping performance over the weekend of July 20-22, 2012.

Christopher Nolan's final Batman installment starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway garnered a powerful $77.2 million on opening day while tracking towards a $170 million premiere weekend in cinemas.

Finding itself bumped down a position after spending one weekend atop the movie world, Twentieth Century Fox Animation/Blue Sky Studios' "Ice Age: Continental Drift" earned $6.8 million on Friday with estimated second place worthy sophomore weekend revenue forecasts set at $21.6 million.

Filling out the top five at the box office in expected totals are the Andrew Garfield/Emma Stone starring Marvel picture "The Amazing Spider-Man" ($11.4 million), followed by Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis' talking teddy bear film "Ted" ($10.2 million) and Pixar/Disney's "Brave" ($6.5 million).
